Rowlee Circuit Walk

Learning outcomes

Most pupils will understand/be able to:

  • How to prepare for a local walk
  • Map symbols and that a map represents an area of ground
  • The differences between a rural and urban environment
  • There is a variety of animals in one area
  • Listening skills, co-operation and trust
  • The need for safe and sensible behaviour
  • Experience success, challenge and leadership looking after a group

Some pupils will have the opportunity to:

  • Make decisions on route choice
  • Be able to interpret contours, map features, use grid references
  • Relate the map to the ground (setting)
  • Improve observation skills
  • Describe a variety of habitats
  • Apply skills in an unfamiliar environment

A range of routes on footpaths/tracks from Hagg Farm.


Session can be led by visting teaching staff with a current first aid qualification, able to read a map and fully briefed on the route.

Health and safety

Appropriate clothing and footwear; care for, use and return of equipment in good state; discussion of teamwork, involvement and leadership, individual responsibility and group control, route choice, weather, emergency procedures. Walking safety sheet, map, compass, radio. Safety pack (with first aid kit, emergency shelter
etc), mobile phone, technical equipment and any personal medication (inhalers etc). Risk assessment no. 27. Pupil ratio 1:12.

Activity session

  • Indoor briefing: to include aims of walk, health and safety (as above), discussion of chosen environmental/artistic/historical themes on the walk.
  • Possible themes: map reading skills; environmental art in the woodlands; change and human impact on the landscape; recreational pressures; formation of gritstone, sedimentaries and geomorphic processes; wildlife habitats/ecosystems.
  • Distribution and discussion of Rowlee Circuit walk pack, pens/pencils.
  • Complete Rowlee Circuit walk.


(at Hagg Farm if cold/wet)

  • Have learning outcomes, above, been met?
  • A range of reviewing techniques with students using writing, speaking skills and creativity to express feelings about activity, performance, involvement, teamwork.
