Statutory Sick Pay

A payment made by your employer whilst you are unable to work due to ill health. You must provide sick notes from your GP to your employer in order for your employer to pay you. SSP can be paid for up to 28 weeks, after which time you may be able to claim Employment and Support Allowance. You may also be entitled to contractual sick pay from your employer, however SSP is the minimum amount your employer must pay you.

Who can apply

This benefit is aimed at the long-term ill and disabled. 

If you are under a contract of service for an employer you are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay if:

1. you are sick for at least 4 days in a row (including weekends and bank holidays and days that you do not normally work)

2. you have average weekly earnings of at least £118 a week

How to apply

You must inform your employer that you are sick so that they can then determine whether you are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay.
