Planning and delivering the programme

During the project’s inception, the Council didn't specify the locations where improvements should happen or when, as it set BT the task of achieving the best possible amount of coverage and speed for the investment available.

BT then created a design for Nottinghamshire based on a balance between public funding and the levels of speed increase which can be achieved. Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme investment will only be made in areas not already served by commercial rollout from BT (or other providers of telecommunications infrastructure).

The rollout can be broken down into five stages:

  1. Pre-planning
  2. Exchange preparation
  3. Surveying
  4. Installation
  5. Ready for service

For more information on what's involved in these five phases, view the Explaining the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire rollout [PDF] document.

The rollout strategy is based on engineering logic taking into account many factors including local demographics and geography, planning requirements, the existing engineering infrastructure and the availability of suitable technologies to provide a service. It’s not possible with a programme of this size to plan every area at the same time so some areas will be enabled before others.
