What is it?

Pubic lice are tiny insects that live on the skin and are often referred to as "crabs". They tend to infest hairy parts of the body, such as the pubic area or under the arms.

Symptoms

Severe itching around the genitals. It is possible to see the small brown eggs (nits) in pubic hair and other body hair.  It may also be possible to see lice droppings (black powder) in underwear and it is sometimes possible to see lice on the skin.

Caused by

Small lice and spread by close contacts but not necessarily during sexual contact (it can be caught by sharing sheets or towels).  Pubic lice cannot travel into the hair on the head - they travel by crawling from hair to hair.  They cannot fly or jump.

Treatment

By a special lotion.
