Language learning
 |
You live a new life for every new language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once. (Czech proverb)
|
As you know well, learning a foreign language takes time and dedication and might not be all that easy as some people may think. However, there are many benefits that may help to convince you to take the plunge, if of course you need such persuasion. There are as many different reasons for learning new languages as many people who learn them, but whatever your reasons, having a clear grasp of why you’re learning a language can help to motivate you in your studies.
|
The main reasons of learning foreign languages can be as follows: - Family and friends – if your relative or friend speaks a different language, then learning that language will enable you to communicate with him or her without any barriers.
- Travelling – even a basic ability in a foreign language will help you in everyday communication and ‘getting by’ in such situations like ordering food and drink, finding your way around, buying tickets or asking for help in case of an accident, while holidaying abroad.
- Friendship – you may develop new friendships and meet new people from other countries, while surfing on the internet, thanks to your extra linguistic abilities.
- Studying abroad – a good knowledge of the local language can be very useful if you plan to study at a foreign university, college or school.
- Culture and religion – it’s very possible that you’re interested in films, music, TV programmes, books or some other aspects of the culture of people who speak a particular language. You may need to learn their language in order to gain better understanding of their culture, religion and general knowledge of our world and other people.
- Emigration – One day you may decide to move to a different country looking for a new career or place to live. Then knowledge of a foreign language will enable you to communicate and integrate with the local community and simply will make your new life easier.
