Common questions about disabled parking (Blue Badges)

How much does it cost?   

A Blue Badge costs £10. This must be sent by cheque or postal order to our Customer Service Centre when you apply. The money will be returned if your application is not successful. 

Where can I use my Blue Badge?     

In general you can use your badge for parking on:

  • single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, unless there is a ban on loading or unloading
  • 'on-street' parking meters and pay-and-display machines for free and for as long as you need to
  • in disabled parking bays. You can find out which car parks have disabled parking bays by checking the car parks information on the relevant district council website.

How should the badge be displayed?   

Make sure the badge is facing upwards, so that the details on the front can be clearly seen. It should be placed on the dashboard. 

You will get a time clock with your badge, which must also be displayed when you are parking on a parking restriction, such as a double or single yellow line. Many disabled bays also have time restrictions and you must check the signs before leaving your vehicle. Displaying the badge and clock on your dashboard helps the Enforcement Officers check that the badge is valid and that you have not exceeded the parking time. 

What do I do if my Blue Badge or time clock is lost or stolen?  

If you lose your Blue Badge, or it is stolen, contact the Customer Service Centre. You will have to apply for a replacement badge. You will be asked to pay £10 for the replacement. 

A Blue Badge time clock is to show how long you have been parked in a disabled parking bay. Many bays have time restrictions. Displaying the clock on your dashboard helps the parking wardens to check that parking times are not exceeded. If you have lost or had your time clock stolen you should contact the Customer Service Centre

If the Blue Badge holder dies, what do I do with their badge?  

The easiest way for you to return a Blue Badge when the holder dies is to return it to the registrar when you register the death. Our Tell us Once service will then cancel the badge and update our records without you needing to do anything else. 

If you aren't able to return the badge at the registrar office you can send it back to our Customer Service Centre along with a letter letting us know the date of the badge holder's death. We will then cancel the badge and update our records for you.  

Misuse of Blue Badges   

A badge can be withdrawn if you misuse it or allow others to misuse it. You should only use your badge if you are travelling in the vehicle as a driver or a passenger. If you give it to someone else to use, this counts as a misuse. 

You should report the misuse of a badge to the Customer Service Centre. You could also contact the police as it is a criminal offence to misuse a Blue Badge and could lead to a £1,000 fine.

If you receive a letter saying that you have misused your badge and you disagree contact the Customer Service Centre.
