Nottinghamshire County Council - Proud of our past, ambitious for our future

Southwell Racecourse passes annual safety check with flying colours

05 July 2012

Race goers at Southwell Racecourse can rest assured that they are in safe hands when visiting the venue after passing its annual safety inspection with flying colours.

Nottinghamshire County Council chairs the safety inspection and audit of the racecourse each summer.

The inspections include checks on the physical integrity of the racecourse, such as the structural condition of stands and seats.

There is also a thorough audit of the venue’s approach to safety which includes the importance placed on safety by upper management at the race course and the quality of stewarding.

The annual inspection of the venue found that:

  • Standards of safety management are exemplary.
  • All agencies present commended the racecourse for their safety management achievements.
  • Reports from recent race-day inspections contained very positive information.

The approval means the racecourse can admit spectators up to the full, safe capacity of their stands.

The assessment was carried out by the Safety Advisory Group, which is made up of experts from Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Newark and Sherwood District Council.

As well as the annual checks, a number of race day inspections will also take place at the ground throughout the year.

The person responsible for issuing the safety certificate is Rob Fisher, Group Manager for Emergency Management and Registration at Nottinghamshire County Council.

He said: "I would like to congratulate the racecourse management team on their continued high standards of safety management.

“This is particularly pleasing with large crowds expected for forthcoming summer fixtures at the racecourse.

"We have received a great deal of positive feedback on how seriously the racecourse takes spectator safety on race days and local people can be satisfied that they have a well-run sporting venue on their doorstep.”

David Roberts, Managing Director at Southwell Racecourse, said: “We are delighted that the Safety Advisory Group commends the proactive the approach of Southwell Racecourse Ltd. to the safety of all our guests, noting the particular importance placed by upper management at the race course on the continued importance of safety, due diligence and the quality of stewarding.”
