In the run up to 5 November our Trading Standards service will be working hard to ensure that the County’s firework retailers are storing fireworks legally and safely and not selling them to children.
Retailers apply each year to Trading Standards for a registration or licence, which permits them to sell fireworks during the period 15 October to 10 November. Fireworks must
- stored in limited quantities only
- kept in suitable secure containers
- kept away from any sources of ignition.
Fireworks must also comply with the BS 7114 safety standard. Retail boxes of fireworks must not be split and sold separately and certain fireworks such as professional display fireworks and bangers are banned for sale to the general public.
It is illegal to sell fireworks or sparklers to any person apparently under the age of 18 years.
“Any information we get helps us to target our enforcement action more effectively,” says Sarah Houlton of Trading Standards. “We would be interested to hear from anyone who has any information about shops they suspect might be selling fireworks to children, or not selling them legally and safely.”
