We are seeking the views and comments from interested parties about developments that are proposed to take place at Dalestorth Primary School over the next year or so.

The proposal is to provide a further 105 permanent pupil places for the school in newly built premises on the school's existing site. This is part of a wider Nottinghamshire County Council remit to provide much needed additional school places in the Sutton-in- Ashfield community.

Background Information

Like many other authorities responsible for providing school places for children and young people, the County Council has been experiencing an increase in demand for places in certain parts of the County.

In this respect, a strategic school place planning and provision review has been undertaken of the predicted demand for places.

The above review has identified a number of schools where extra pupil places are required to meet the assessed need.

In respect of providing additional places at Dalestorth Primary School, the following important issues have been taken into account:

  • the number of children likely to benefit from the proposal
  • the likely effects on the school's teaching and support staff
  • the ability to offer more places at Dalestorth Primary to families in the local community

Statutory Process

In order for the County Council to progress with their proposal it is a legal requirement to publish a 'statutory notice' to significantly expand the physical capacity of the school; a 'significant expansion' is deemed to be where a school's net capacity to accommodate pupils is permanently increased by 25% or more.

This is part of the process that gives formal notice of the proposal to those at the school and others in the immediate area. Prior to the notice being published however, the County Council is also required to consult with local people so that they can give their views. If you have any views or comments on the proposal mentioned in this leaflet, there are a number of ways you can have your say. Please let us have your response by Friday 16 November 2012.

The responses collected will help to make a recommendation to the County Council about whether to publish a statutory notice. If the County Council agrees to the publication of the notice, there will be a further four week period during which formal comments or objections can be made about the proposal.

The outcome of representations made in writing to the notice will then be considered by the County Council as part of its statutory duties before making a final decision on whether or not the proposal can be implemented.

Depending on the outcome of the decision making process, it is proposed to have the new additional pupil places available from September 2013.

Any legal requirements that would necessitate the approval of planning permission for the proposed additional school places, would be subject to a separate public consultation in due course.

This consultation closes on Friday 16 November 2012.
