Nottinghamshire County Council is the largest employer in the county employing just over 18,000 people overall, with a budget of £1.2bn that delivers around 440 services to 796,200 people. Nottinghamshire is the 9th largest local authority in England.
The Chief Executive and the four Corporate Directors are responsible for delivering the Council's strategic objectives, managing the activities of the Council’s employees, delivering service improvement and transformation, balancing the budget and advising Councillors on the potential implications of political decisions. The team work closely with all politicians to provide overall leadership and direction for the Council to ensure priorities are addressed and local needs are met.
They also manage the Council’s overall performance, look at ways to improve services and work closely with local organisations including the police, NHS and the wider business community and voluntary sector to deliver the Council’s strategic priorities.
While public accountability and responsibilities have increased over recent years, the Chief Executive and the corporate leadership team continue to balance the political and managerial dynamics of local authorities.
The public's democratically elected representatives - the local Councillors - decide the level of remuneration for chief officers on the basis of particular accountability and responsibilities; the size of the job (the range of services to be provided, the numbers of employees and the size of the local population).
