He was the son of Thomas and Naomi Whalley and the brother of Thomas Henry, Edna Miriam, Victoria Evelyn, Hector, Francis Hilda and Floence Jane Whalley. In 1901 they lived at 8 Chaworth Street and in 1911 at 77 Latham Street (both Bulwell Nottingham).
In 1911 he was a grocer's assistant.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Second Lieutenant Leonard Whalley formerly with service number 19145 ( Private and Acting Corporal) with York & Lancaster Regiment. He landed in France on 27TH August 1915. He was commissioned 31st October 1917 and transferred via 3rd Bn Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 26th March 1918 , he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial
