Joseph Henry Shorthouse was born in 1888 the son of Joseph a colliery roadman and Lydia Shorthouse (née Glover). His father was born in 1854 at Donisthorpe Leicestershire, his mother in 1853 at Bulwell. They were married in 1872 and had eight children three of whom doed during infancy. Joseh’s surviving siblings were Arthur b.1875, Mary Ellen b.1879, Lydia b.1884 and Jane b.1892. Joseph Henry married Lilian Rowe at Nottingham in 1909 and they lived at 6 Hazel Grove Bulwell. Their son William Henry was born in 1910. In 1911 his parents also lived in Bulwell at 21 Hazel Grove.
He was a lace warehouse man.

Joseph Henry Shorthouse enlisted at Nottingham and served with 'D' Company. He landed in France on 11th October 1915. He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme. Blighty Valley Cemetery Authuille Wood Grave Reference: V D 27
