William was the son of William, born in 1853 at Bourne Lincolnshire and working as a house painter and Elizabeth Shipley, born in 1841 at Bristol. In 1901 they lived at 25 Grey Friars Gate Nottingham. William married Elizabeth Ann Holroyd in 1907 and they lived at 23 Brand Street Meadow Lane Nottingham. Elizabeth had been born in 1882 in Nottingham.

Shipley volunteered for service and following training was sent to Egypt, arriving on 12/7/1915. He later moved to France and was part of the 6th Army Tramway Company, R.E. He was caught up in the fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres and was seriously wounded. He died at the casualty clearing station at Dozinghem. Dozinghem Military Cemetery Grave Reference: IV J 11
