Elias was born in 1877 in Daybrook and was the son of Robert a labourer and Emma Lovegrove née Oscroft , his parents were married in Arnold in 1878. Elias married his wife Emma Susan Whitbread (b1875 Ilkeston ) in 1896, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have 5 children all of whom were born in Basford, they were Annie b1898, Cyril b1900, Edward Elias b1902, Norman b1904 and Emma Priscilla b1907 . In the 1911 census the family are living at 43 Eland Street, Basford and are shown as Elias 34 yrs a carter working for Hays straw dealers, he is living with his wife Susan 36 yrs and his children Annie 13 yrs a curtain mender , Cyril 11 yrs as scholar, Edward Elias 9 yrs a scholar, Norman 7yrs a scholar and Emma Pricilla 4 yrs. His probate was proven in Nottingham on 19th September 1916 and shows him as Elias Lovegrove of 2 Malt Cottages, Eland Street, Nottingham, Private in HM Army died 20th July 1916 in France, his effects of £123 were left to his widow Emma Susan Lovegrove.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Elias Lovegrove, enlisted at Nottingham , he served with the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th July 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Obituary notice published 31st August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LOVEGROVE. – Killed in action, July 20th, Gunner Elias Lovegrove, Sherwood Foresters, beloved husband of Susan Lovegrove, late of 2, Malt-cottages, Eland-street, Basford.
