William Edgar Flory was born in 1886 in Tannington, Sufolk and was the son of the late George a coal miner and Charlotte Flory née Anwood of 53a Mandalay Street, Old Basford Nottingham. His father George was born in 1858 in Dennington, Suffolk and his mother Charlotte Anwood was born in 1858 in Leicester, they were married in 1882 in Nottingham and went on to have 6 children, Adaline b1883, George b1884, William b1887, Horace b1889, Edith b1890, all were born in Basford, their last child Thomas b1893 was born in Basford. The family were living at Hawthorn Terrace in Mansfield in the 1891 census , his father George died in 1892 aged 30 yrs (the age given at death) which was registered in the Mansfield Registration District. In the 1911 census the family is living at 53a Mandalay Street and are shown as Charlotte 53 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Adaline 28 yrs a hosiery mender, George 27 yrs a hosiery bleacher, Horace 22 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Edith 21 yrs a hosiery hand and Thomas 18 yrs a bleachers labourer William Edgar married his wife Bertha Mary Tugg on 3rd September 1910 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they went on to have two children, William Henry born 27th February 1911 at Nottingham and Maria born 1st February 1915 at Heanor. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Ingram Road, Bulwell, Nottingham and are shown as William Edgar 25 yrs a coal miner , he is living with his wife Bertha 23 yrs born Codnor and their son William Henry 1 month old

Corporal William Edgar Flory enlisted at Nottingham on 1st June 1915 , he gave his age as 29 yrs and 3 months, his address as Fletcher Street, Heanor, Derbyshire and his occupation as a coal dealer, his next of kin was his wife Bertha Maria of the same address. He was posted to the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and was promoted to Corporal on 22nd May 1916. He was killed in action on 31st July 1917 and is buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
