Joseph was born in Walkeringham on 22nd August 1899 the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cave (nee Hill) . In the 1911 census we find him as a servant (groom) in service to Robert Kaye of Great Glenn Manor at LeIcester , Robert Kaye is a hosiery manufacturer and has a total of nine servants working for him at the manor. It would appear that Joseph met his wife Agnes Louisa Tailby while working in service as they went on to marry at the local parish church at Oadby, Leicestershire on 18th May 1911. They had two children Kathleen Iris born at Greenholme Cottages Kendall on 18th November 1912 and Gladys born at 58 Filbert Street, Leicester on 23rd June 1916. After his death his wife Agnes Laura went on to marry again and became Agnes Laura Peel and lived at 7, East Street, Oadby, Leicester

His service record tells us that Joseph enlisted at Leicester on 23rd October 1915, he gave his age as 26 years and nine months and that he was a groom and lived with his wife at 58 Filbert Street Leicester. He was posted to the Remount section of the Army Service Corps and was working with the 52nd remounts section at Kettering . His service record goes on to show that he was admitted to the Northern General Hospital at Leicester where he died on 22nd March of 1918, the cause of death given as dementia, his age being 28 years and 151 days . He was buried by his family at Leicester's Welford Cemetery
