Robert was born at Everton in 1877, the son of Luke Clark and Elizabeth Pettinger (nee Teal) His father was a canal boatman and coal dealer. He had six siblings, Anne 1867, John 1870, James 1872, William 1880, Edith 1883 and Walter Clark 1887. He married his wife Emma Hewitt who was born at West Stockwith in 1880 at Misterton in 1901. They had five children, Ernest 1902, Lily 1904, Amy 1906, Olive 1910 and Edna May 1912.

Robert enlisted into the Army at East Retford in 1915,he served in the Royal Field Artillery but was later discharged. He died at West Stockwith on 11th August 1919 and is buried in Misterton Cemetery
