Misterton
Fred was born at Misterton in 1891 the son of William and Clara Spencer. His father was a brick maker at the local brick yard and the family lived at Gringley Road, Misterton. He had 7 siblings, Elizabeth 1885, Walter 1888, Ethel 1890, John 1892, Arthur 1897, William Ernest 1899, George Charles 1900.
He was employed as a labourer in the local brick yard.

2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment
Fred enlisted into the Army at East Retford in January 1915 , he originally served with the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry- Sherwood Rangers with service number 22006. He later transferred to the 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment and while serving with them was killed in action during the battle of the Somme. The local paper published the following article when Fred was reported missing :- Mr Wm Spencer of Gringley Road,Misterton has received official notification that his son private Fred Spencer (19500) has been posted as 'missing' from the 7th July. Private Spencer joined the Sherwood Foresters in January 1915 but was transferred to the Northampton Regiment before going to the front in July of the same year. He was employed by Mr Geo Cooper brick manufacturer before enlisting. His parents would be glad to hear from any comrade or friend who may be able to furnish any particulars about him. He was later reported killed in action on 8th July 1916. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
