Joseph was born in 1883 the son of John and Mary Ann Roberts (née Taylor). He had a sister Fanny born in 1887. He married Sarah Agnes Jacklin who was born in Winterton Lincolnshire in 1889 at Lincoln in 1915. They lived at 14 Sewers Lane Winterton.
He was an agricultural labourer.

Robert was formerly with the Coldstream Guards (4573). He transferred to the Corps of Military Police. He died of influenza shortly after the armistice. Etaples Military Cemetery Grave Reference: LI C 2
