John was born in Austerfield in 1891,the son of Joseph William and Evalina Fritchley (nee Farmer) his father was the local vicar and they lived at the Old Vicarage in Misterton. He had seven siblings, Evalina Eliza b 1875 Alice Mary b 1877, Margaret b 1881, Robert Shacklock b 1884, Joseph b 1886, Winifred Daisy b 1889 and Reginald b 1894.
He was employed as wholesale draper.

The following is the obituary of Sgt John Royal Fritchley published in the Retford Times :- Sgt John Royal Fritchley of the South African Infantry has been killed in action in France. He enlisted in the South African Infantry at Durban, Natal in August 1915. He was sent to England in October of 1915 and on December 30th of the same year he left for Egypt. He went through the Tripoli campaign and left Egypt for France in April 1916. He was made Sergeant in France while serving on The Somme on 5th march 1917 and before last Christmas was offered a commission. Sergeant Fritchley is the son of the Reverend Joseph W Fritchley of the Old Vicargae ,Misterton His age was 27
