He was the son of Tom and Mary Ann Phipps and the brother of Rose, Edith, Bramwell, Sabina, Albert, Wlater and Stanley Phipps. In 1911 they lived at 19 Middle Orchard Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire.
In 1911 he was a stationary engine man.

George Phipps was killed in action at Gallipoli. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial Gallipoli.
