He was the son of John and Elizabeth Mitchell and the brother of Harold Mitchell of 14 Park Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. He lived at 14 Clarence Road Wood Green London by the time he enlisted.
In 1911 he was a clerk and a chief clerk upon enlistment.

He enlisted under Lord Derby's Scheme 8/12/1915 standing 5' 10" and weighing 133 lbs. He was mobilised in 1916 and posted 26/11/1916. He was taken ill 7/2/1917 with a gastric ulcer and died of septic peritonitis and influenza at the Huddersfield War Hospital.
Personal effects returned to Mitchell's family were: 1 pair of gloves, 1 collar & tie, 1 handkerchief, 2 pipes, 1 razor, 1 pair of scissors in a case, 1 cap badge, 2 numerals, 1 mirror, 1 note book, 1 cigarette case, 1 tin box,1 small knife, 1 wallet, letters, cards and photos.
