1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
George Field enlisted in the Army Reserve on 10 August 1914, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was 23 years 235 days of age and 5 feet 3 inches in height. He listed his father as deceased. After initial recruit training he was posted to the 1st Battalion in France on 27 December 1914. The battalion spent the winter South west of Lille and it was horrendous with terrible weather and trenches full of mud and water. By February some improvement was seen but some areas of trench were still made up of breastworks owing to the water level. At some point on 25 February 1915 Alfred was killed and he was one of three men to die that day. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France. John Morse
