George Alfred was born in 1881 at Basford and was the son of William, a coal miner, and Mary A Spencer. He married his wife Ethel Draper on 30th May 1909 in Fermoy, Ireland. They went on to have 4 children, Frederick George born 29th August 1908 Derby, Ethel Edith born 8th October 1909 Fermoy, Kathleen born 19th April 1912 Nottingham and Leslie born 14th February 1915 Nottingham. In the 1911 census George Alfred is found living at 28 Whiteleigh Terrace, Crownhill, Plymouth. He is a serving soldier with the Notts & Derbys Regiment, 29 yrs, married and is living with his wife Ethel 25 yrs (born Basford) and his two children, Frederick George 2yrs born Normanton, Derbys, and Ethel Edna 1yr born Formoy, Ireland. (The address would appear to be married quarters as the Sherwood Foresters Regiment barracks were at Crownhill, Plymouth, Devon, at this date.) Following his death his widow Ethel was informed by letter from the War Office dated 29th April 1916 that she would be awarded a pension of 23 shillings in respect of her and her 4 children with effect from 17th April 1916. At the time of George's death she was living at 37 Shipstone Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham.
He had previously been a miner and then became a professional soldier.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Corporal George Alfred Spencer re-enlisted at Nottingham on 17th September 1912; he was 31 yrs and 2 months old. He had previously served with the Sherwood Foresters for 12 yrs and left when his time was expired. He served with the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 24th February 1915 and to Corporal on 20th March 1915.He landed in France on 11th November 1914 and was serving with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 9th August 1915. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
Spencer's birth was registered J/A/S/1881 so he may have been 33 when killed.
