He was the son of John and Charlotte Merryman and the brother of John, Edith, Fred, Robert, Elizabeth, Gertrude, Mary and John Henry Merryman. In 1901 they lived at 13 Sketchley Street Blue Bell Hill Road and in 1911 at 3 Edwin Street (both St Ann's Nottingham). John snr and Charlotte later lived at 65 Coppice Road, St Ann's.
In 1911 he was an errand boy (drapery).

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Herbert Merryman, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action on 14th April 1916 and he is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension .
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 22 April 1916: 'Merryman. Killed in action April 14th, Bert, 55 Coppice Road. Dad and family.' In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th April 1917:- “MERRYMAN. – In loving memory of Private Herbert Merryman, Sherwood Foresters, 65, Coppice-road, age 19, [1] killed in action April 14th, 1916.
