Sneinton Nottingham
Father: Richard Ackroyd, who married Mary Ann Gamble in Nottingham in 1876. They had eleven children, wight of whom were still alive at the time of the 1911 census. These were: Annie, born in 1882, Robert, born in 1885, William, born in 1888, Herbert, born in 1891, Sarah Ann, born in 1893, Priscilla, born in 1896, Ev, born in 1898 and Richard, born in 1901. The family lived at 11 Nelson Square, Sneinton before moving to 66 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton. Richard Ackroyd worked as a railway goods porter and died in 1924. His wife died in 1947, aged 89. Herbert married Daisy Castledine 9/10/1915 at St Peter's Church. She married Ernest Hind in 1919 and they lived at 83 Cavendish Street Shirebrook Mansfield.
Herbert Ackroyd worked as a machine fitter.

23rd Bn The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment)
Ackroyd enlisted at Birmingham and following training was drafted to France. In 1917 the battalion was in the Ypres Salient and he was killed in action on 07/06/1917. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
