Walter Gregory was born in 1876 at Middlewood, Yorkshire. He married May Gregory, nee Walton at St. Leodegarious Parish Church, bas ford, Nottingham on 31/01/1903. They had one son, John Walton Gregory, born on 22/02/ 1907 at Carrington, Nottingham. The family lived at 26 Sherbrooke Road, Carrington, Nottingham before moving to 7 Hawrhorne Terrace, Carrington.

Pte. Gregory attested on 07/12/1915 at Nottingham but was not mobilised until 07/06/1917 at Derby, where he joined the 4th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters Depot. He was training in Sunderland when he developed pneumonia and died in military hospital on 24/01/1918, another victim of the great influenza pandemic sweeping through Europe at that time. His body was not brought home, but buried at Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) Cemetery.
