Pte George W Bird Worksop Guardian 20 October 1916 Some little time ago, intimation was received by Mr and Mrs Henry Bird, 89 Harrington Street, Worksop, that their son Pte George William Bird, Yorks and Lancs Regiment, had been killed in action. The news was contained in a letter from the Officer Commanding, which stated the circumstances of his death. Yesterday the official notification was received, so that the sympathy of everyone one will be extended to the bereaved family in their great trouble. Pte Bird had been in France about three months previous to his death, and he was drafted there after about nine months service in Egypt and a lengthy time in the army.
Buried at Stump Road Cemetery, Grandcourt, France; a small cemetery situated in the middle of fields approached up a narrow track and a very peaceful location. The cemetery is always beautifully maintained as are all CWGC cemeteries. Pte Bird shares his headstone with Pte James Broster who was born in Stafford but moved to Leicester after he was married; shortly after his death his widow gave birth to their only son. ............................................................................................................... Pte. Bird is commemorated on the United Methodist Church Memorial now (2015) held at the Bassetlaw Museum Grove Street Retford. Robert Ilett 14.12.15
