William Cope (a coal miner) and Eliza Godber married in 1876 at Nottingham. They had four children before Eliza died in 1890 age 37, Sarah, born 1876, John 1879, William 1884 and Eliza born 1889. By 1891, widowed William was working at Newstead Colliery with his four children. He remarried in 1897 to Ellen Wallhead, a widow who bought with her, four children from her previous marriage. William senior died in 1902 aged 52. The houswehold of Ellen Cope in 1911 also consisted of step-son William Cope junior and son Osborne Wallhead both working as coal miners from their address of 85 Newstead Colliery.
He was a miner.
