He was the son of James a coal miner and farm labourer who died in 1911 and Mary Haywood. George was one of ten children two of whom died in infancy. The family moved to Rose Hill Farm St Matthias Road Sneinton before 1891 and still lived there in 1911.
He was a blacksmith striker.
