He was the son of George and Martha Askew Born in Fourth Quarter 1892 Finchley Middlesex On 1901 Census he is living with his mother and sister Eveline at 2 Croydon Road, Radford, Nottingham. His mother is listed as a sweet shopkeeper On 1911 Census he is living with his parents and sisters - Annie Elizabeth and Marion and his nephew Frederick Harold Askew at 85 Beverley Street St Ann's Nottingham. His father is listed as a pedlar and Reginald as a confectioner's assistant Another sibling George W. Askew lived at 14 St. Mary’s Avenue, Finchley. He is named on his service record as brother and legatee
He was a member of the Boys' Brigade (7th Nottingham Coy [St Christopher]).

He enlisted in 1st Nottinghamshire Battery, Royal Horse Artillery on 20th September 1914 in Nottingham. Embarked at Avonmouth 9th April 1915 aboard SS Nitonian Arrived in Egypt 25th April 1915 He died of dysentery in Egypt and is buried in Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery (Row A Grave 109).
Nottingham Post notice 16 June 1915: 'Askew. Gunner Reginald Douglas, 1st Notts RHA, died June 4th of dysentery, aged 22 years. Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Sadly missed by his brother, sisters and fiancée.' UKSWD cites Nottingham as Askew's birth place but the 1911 Census has Finchley (confirmed by Free BMD). It is possible that the fiancée was Miss Amy Graves of 81 Trent Road, Nottingham. She is named on his Form 118a, and his brother gave instructions that a gold ring be forwarded to her if returned with his personal effects 477 Driver John Henry Thompson also from Nottingham is buried in the row behind Reginald Askew Row B Grave 105
