Harold was born on 17th March 1894 and was the son of George a farm labourer and Emma Joyner née Harris of Chevington Shipton-on-Stour Worcestershire. His father George was born in 1865 in Cherrington, Warwickshire and his mother Emma Harris was born in 1865 in Blackwell, Warwickshire, they were married in 1890 , their marriage was recorded in the Shipston on Stour registration district. They had 6 children , sadly one died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911, their children were Frederick G b1892, Harold William b1894, Olive Candace b1897 Winifred J M b1900 and Phylis Coronella b1906 all the children were born in Cheddington. In the 1911 census the family are shown living in Cherrington, and are shown as George 45 yrs head of the family an agricultural labour, he is living with his wife Emma 44 yrs and 4 of their children , Frederick 19 yrs a farm labourer, Olive 14 yrs, Winifred 11 yrs and Phylis 5 yrs. Harold in the 1911 census has moved out of the family home , he has moved up to Hucknall Torkard possibly to find work. He is living with his aunt and uncle James and Ellen Harris at 37 Bentinck Yard, Hucknall Torkard , he is 17 yrs old single and a pony driver in a pit , his uncle James is a coal miner at the pit.

Harold enlisted on 17th August 1915 ,he gives his date of birth as 17th March 1894 and his place of birth is given as Cherrington, Shipton on Soar, his next of kin is his mother Emma He served with the 2nd Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Portsmouth Pte. Harold William Joyner, 16 Platoon, “D” Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Marine Light Infantry, died as a prisoner of war on 1st November 1918. He had been captured at Gavrelle on 28th April 1917 and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany
