He was the son of Mr and Mrs Wilkins of 52 Beverley Street St Ann's Well Road Nottingham. He was the husband of Martha (née Pontefract) Wilkins and the father of Hilda Sylvia, Emily May, Gladys Ada, Elsie, John and Louis Wilkins. They lived at 2 Beverley Street in 1911 and later at 21 Dunscombe Street (both St Ann's Well Road Nottingham).
He was a tram conductor in 1911 and was later employed by Boots.

He served in the South African Campaign. He had twenty years service and had fought at Mons. He was reported as missing, and was later confirmed as killed in action during an attack on the Quadrilateral near Holnon Village, France. His name was commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 7)
