25058 Private William Henry Hollingsworth enlisted in The Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in April 1915, probably when he reached the age of 18 years. After training he was sent overseas to the 1st battalion. On 22 October 1916 the battalion occupied trenches on the Somme, which were deep with mud. The war diary for the day ' Bombardment of enemy trenches continued. Most of the battalion spent the early morning lying on the parapet shooting and sniping at the enemy as he tried to evade the shelling.; The Battalion was relieved by the 2nd Northampton's at 2 am, and marched back to Tatler trench situated at T.8.a; Fine night, marching much easier, but great difficulty was experienced in finding the way. Guides were completely baffled by the darkness;' William Henry was one of three men killed that day. he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
