He was the husband of Sarah Jane Bird (née Plowman) Bird whom he had married in 1906 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They had the following children , Sarah Ann, Jane and Samuel Bird. In 1911 they lived at 59 Whyburn Street Hucknall Torkard. His widow Sarah Jane married John Coleman in 1918.

1st Bn Gloucestershire Regiment
Private Sam Bird, enlisted in Hucknall and served with the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 7th November 1914. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium
