Private Walter Stokes enlisted in Nottingham , he gave his place of birth as Nottingham and his place of residence of Radford, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 16th December 1915. He was killed in action on 14th February 1916, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th February 1918 reads :- “STOKES. – In loving memory of Pte. W. Stokes, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action February 14th, 1916. Bravely he answered duty's call, now there's nothing to look at but his photo on the wall. – From his sorrowing wife [Elizabeth].” Above obituary courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914- 1918.
