John known as Jack was born in 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur a drapers porter and Frances Palmer née Hiron of 10 Bloom Square Ilkeston Road New Radford Nottingham. His father was born in 1862 in Leicester and his mother Frances Elizabeth Hiron was born in 1860 in Gloucestershire they were married in 1892 in Nottingham and had a further child a daughter Edith Minnie b1894 Nottingham. In the 1901 census the family are living at 7 Brewsters Place, Nottingham.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Jack Palmer, served with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action on 31st December 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
Death notification published 19th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PALMER. – Killed in action, December 31st, 1917. Pte.
