He was the son of Matthew and Harriet Hannah Shepherd and the brother of Hilda Shepherd. In 1911 they lived at 17 Wilson's Place Woolpack Lane Nottingham.
Member of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). At the time of the 1911 census Alfred was an office boy.
