Arthur was born in 1892 in Rawal Pindi, India he was the son of Walter a hosiery trimmer and Hannah Elizabeth Meakin , of 14 Cheltenhem Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Walter had been born in 1863 in Nottingham and his mother Hannah Elizabeth had been born in 1872 in Sutton Bonnington , in the 1911 census they state they had been married 20 yrs C1891, they went on to have 4 children , sadly 1 of whom died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were Arthur Gordon b 1892 Rawal Pindi, India, Nora Eleanor b1894 Cliffden Murrel,India and George Charles Stanley b 1908 Nottingham. In the 1901 census the family are living at 41 Park Lane, Old Basford, at this time Walter is 38 yrs and a coal miner, he is living with his wife Hannah 28 yrs and their 2 children Arthur Gordon 9 yrs and Nora Eleanor 7 yrs. In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Cheltenham Street, Old Basford, and are shown as , Walter 48 yrs a wagon builders labourer head of the family , he is living with his wife Hannah Elizabeth 39 yrs and their three children , Arthur Gordon 19 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Nora Eleanor 17 yrs a hosiery mender and George Charles Stanley 3 yrs. Following his death Arhurs probate was proven in Nottingham on 28th December 1917 and shows him as Arthur Gordon Meakin , 14 Cheltenham Road, Old Basford Nottingham , L/Corp in H M Army died 24th October 1917 in France, his effects of £210 12 shillings went to Walter Meakin a hosiery trimmer (his father)

Arthur Gordon Meakin, enlisted in Newcastle upon Tyne , he gave his place of birth as Rawal Pindi, India and that he was residence in Nottingham. He served with 9th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, and was killed in action on 24th October 1917, and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery.
Obituary published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' dated 24th October 1918: - “MEAKIN. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. Arthur Gordon Meakin, K.R.R., killed in action October 24th, 1917. 'Tis sweet to know we'll meet again, where partings are no more, and the one I loved so well has only gone before; so long as life and memory last, we will remember thee.
