He was born in 1899 the son of David and Eliza Murray. In 1901, David, a civil servant, Eliza and their two year old son, David, were living at 50 Marwell Road, Wolverhampton. By 1911 the family was living at 338 Radford Road, Hyson Green. The CWGC record gives his parents' address as 33 Randal Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham.
He worked for the Ordnance Survey.

He was attached to 76th Infantry Bde. He formerly served (79478) with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He died in the War Hospital Croydon. Hucknall Cemetery Grave Reference: C. South 2331
A tablet at the foot of the CWGC headstone reads, 'In loving memory of David Pirie Murray born 31st March 1899 died 17th July 1918 [and] Joe Bramley, born (-) June 1876 died 23rd July 1898. Both late of the Ordnance Survey.' Soldiers' Effects: his father was his sole legatee.
