He was the elder son of Sarah and the late Henry Hooks of 41 Church Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire. A younger brother Harold also trained with the Sherwood Foresters for seven months. On embarkation he was transferred to the West Kent Regiment and received a shrapnel wound to the foot (Eastwood & Kimberley Advertiser 2/11/1917).
He worked as a grocer's assistant for Saxton and Sons and at the time of enlistment Skeltons Ltd.

He enlisted 2/11/1915 in Ilkeston and served with 18th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps and served in France between May and October 1916 when he was invalided home. In January 1917 he returned to duty with the 2/20th Bn London Regiment and drafted to Salonika in February 1917.
