1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
67108 Cpl John William Hames enlisted at Derby in March 1916, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). After training he was posted to 1st Battalion. The German Spring offensive had opened with a devastating attack on the Somme front and the British were pushed back rapidly across the old (1916) Somme battlefield. The 1st Battalion was rushed into action on 22nd and had been fighting constantly and holding the enemy at bay. The 25th saw the battalion being pressed hard but hanging onto its ground until ordered back in a general withdrawal. By this time they were partially surrounded and the enemy stood between it and the new line. The men led by the Commanding Officer and taking their wounded with them, charged the enemy and broke through, returning to their Brigade, who had listed them as 'surrounded and prisoners' Only nine men were listed as killed, although many had been wounded. John William was one of the men killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
