George was born in Newark in 1884 and was the son of Thomas Abbott, an engineering mechanic and Sarah Abbott. of "Oaklands", Stevenage, Herts. In the 1901 census the family are living at 18 The Square Retford at this time George is 17 years of age and a student he has four siblings living with him at this time one of which Alfred is also 17 years of age By the 1911 census George is 27 years of age and has left home and is living as a boarder with Ernest Jenkins and family and living at Conagley, Russell Ave, St Albans, his occupation is that of assistant master at a secondary school. His probate record dated 17th February 1919 in London shows him as George Abbott of Holywell Cottage, St Albans, Herts a Lieutenant in the 1st battalion Hertfordshire Regiment died on 27th August 1918 in France on active service , his estate worth £111. 8s 5d is left to his father Thomas.

He is buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No 2 , Hebuterne, Pas-de-Calais, France grave reference IV G 30 Please note CWGC gives regiment as Hertfordshire while school magazine gives Bedfordshires
The following article is taken from the 'In memoriam' section of the 'Retfordian' magazine which was an in house publication of the King Edward VI Grammar School, Retford :- George Abbott, lieutenant 1st Bedfordshire regt, who was a great favourite with his school fellows in the late 90's was killed in action on August 23rd at Achiet-le-Petit. After taking his degree at Wadham College, Oxford, he entered the teaching profession, and was for several years a valued member of staff of St Alban's School, where he was editor of the school magazine and an officer in the O.T.C. His commanding officer wrote:- " he behaved magnificently in action and set an example to his men of which we are all very proud.
