He was the son of John Gregory Simpson and Annie Simpson of 5 Nottingham Road Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Two brothers also served one being taken prisoner by the Germans and another surviving an air raid whilst in hospital with Trench Feet.
He ran a greengrocery business at Hill Top Eastwood Nottinghamshire.
