John was born at Little Munden, Hertfordshire in 1880 the son of Charles and Caroline Head (nee Reed) his father was an agricultural labourer. He again came from a very large family having 11 siblings, George 1862, Arthur 1865, Emma 1868, Alfred 1869, Charles 1870, James 1872, William 1878, John 1880, Clara 1881 and Thomas 1883. He was married to his wife Clara Caroline Shepherd who was born in Walkeringham in 1889 at her local parish of Walkeringham in 1911. They had 3 children Gladys M b1911 Beatrice M b1914 and Doris b1916.
He was employed as a grinder in the local Morriss' chemical works

1st Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
John enlisted at East Retford and served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action on the third day of the battle of the Somme. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial on the Somme
