Person Details
Worksop, Notts
Bert Phillips was born in Worksop in 1889. He was the eldest son of John ‘Jack’ and Sarah Phillips, who had registered him John Bertie Phillips but always referred to as Bert. He had 4 brothers. Bert’s father was a handmade chair maker which was a skilled industry in Worksop at that time. The whole family, including the parents, were born in Worksop. The initial family home was in Church Walk but moved on to Priorswell Road by 1901 and eventually resided in 59 Garside Street. Bert took a job as a grinder in the local steel works and in 1909 married Grace Dernie and had a son before enlisting in the army. Although he appears in the 1911 census as a married man, he is living with his parents in Garside Street and not with his wife.
