Charles Caudwell was the 4th son of six children born to George and Sarah Hannah Caudwell, nee Swannack, in 1888. His place of birth was at Hardwick, Worksop. His father’s occupation was a sawyer working in woodyards, probably on the local estate. The family spent many years living at Hardwick but by 1911 the father was 67 years old retired, and now living at 49 Central Ave, Worksop. Charles was now working at Manton Colliery as an underground coal mining trammer.

Charles enlisted at Worksop in the Lincolnshire Regiment and was soon fighting in the Gallipoli campaign where he was killed in action is now remembered on the Helles Memorial
