Pte. R Boyfield Worksop Guardian 3 September 1915 Another of the many men who responded to the call from Manton Colliery has laid down his life, in the person of Richard Boyfield, a son of Mr Parke 11 St Cuthbert Street, Worksop. He was Just 21 years of age, a smart and steady lad and a great favourite with all who knew him. He joined the 6th Lincolns twelve months ago and for the last two months he had taken a manful part in operations in the Dardanelles. A younger brother, Private David Boyfield age 19 joined the same regiment shortly after his brother. He too was drafted out and the lads fought side by side. In his last letter home, written on 2nd August, Private Richard Boyfield says that he and his brother were well, but were having a rough time. He speaks of the severe character of the fighting and how men have been killed either side of him. Six days later, August 8th, he died a soldier’s death. Poor lad, he was scarcely more than that he will be much missed by his many friends. At the time of writing no further news has been received respecting his brother. Great sympathy is expressed with his mother and family in their bereavement.
CWG additional information:- Son of Richard and Sarah Jane Parkes, of 11, St. Cuthbert St., Worksop, Notts. Named on the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli). His younger brother, David, died a day later in the same regiment and same place. Research by Colin Dannatt
