In army prior to the war. Enlisted 24/10/1900 in Dublin aged 18 years and 6 months. Served in India and discharged after 8 years into reserve on 24/12/1908. Described as very good, a steady reliable man with no instances of drunkenness. Received 2 good conduct medals. Was in the regimental band for 5 years, B/flat clarinet. Recalled to the colours on the outbreak of war. Had taken part in the battles of Marne, Aisne and Ypres.
He was described in his discharge papers as "very good, a steady reliable man, with no instances of drunkenness during his 8 years of service". Was in the regimental band as a B flat clarinettist for 5 years. He received 2 good conduct medals.
