He was the son of John Chambers and the husband of Gertrude Chambers of 8 Albert Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire. He left four young children. He was one of six brothers to enlist and the third to be killed. At the time of his death the surviving three were all in the trenches.

A Reservist, he enlisted at Leicester and was wounded in fighting around Hill 60 near Ypres in May 1915 and died a POW in German custody. His family remained unaware of Chambers' fate for nine months.
